At the Altar: Update on Ongoing Iverson Saga
If you're looking for more of my words about Allen Iverson, this is not the place. I'm just dropping quotes from people far better connected then myself around the internets. Time to get busy:
One rival GM, citing a conversation with someone from the Grizzlies coaching staff, told ESPN.com that the Grizzlies and Iverson had mutually agreed to part ways. According to this source, the word is that Iverson was causing too many distractions and the team didn't want to deal with Iverson's insistence that he be put in the starting lineup.
But another league source cautioned that these things often have a way of working themselves out over time.
"You never say it's over until it's over," the source said. "The Grizzlies still owe Iverson a lot of money. I'm sure they're going to explore trading him but it's going to be really, really hard. If they can't, they may have to swallow $3.5 million this season. That works out to $1 million per game. They have a lot of financial problems there. I'm just not sure they are going to give up just yet." [...]
Is history repeating itself? If it is, one GM was ready to write AI's NBA eulogy: "He's finished in the NBA. He can go hang out with Stephon Marbury."
But as of Saturday night, it seems as if Iverson was not going to leave it all on the court. Instead of going down fighting, his career has started to echo those far sadder words said by Gen. Douglas MacArthur soon after Harry S Truman fired him for insubordination: "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away."
The party line from Ronald Tillery at the Commercial Appeal:
Griz owner Michael Heisley vehemently insisted that Iverson needed time off to handle an important family issue. A timetable for Iverson's return is unknown.
The veteran guard did not ask for a trade or request to be waived. Heisley said the team knew about Iverson's issue before signing him to a one-year, $3.1 million contract in September.
"I'm not going to get into the personal reason but it has nothing to do with the other stuff," Heisley said, referring to Iverson's public displeasure over his reserve role. "I'm the guy who said he could go. It's a real family issue that I don't think should be reported."
And from Marc Spears at Yahoo Sports:
The source said Iverson wants to clear his head and is extremely unhappy about the lack of communication with Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins over his playing time and role with the team. [...]In an interview with Yahoo! Sports early last week Iverson said he could envision the end of his career.
"I definitely can see myself walking away from basketball, walking away from [the media]," Iverson said.
During the interview, Iverson described his free-agent experience over the summer as "horrible." He also complained that many people had begun to doubt he could still play at a high level.
"There's more [people] that would rather see me fail than succeed," Iverson said. "You think I don't know that people left me for dead?"
More Marc Spears from his Twitter (via Hoopshype):
AI takes personal leave from grizz, wasnt waived, return uncertain, not bb related, sources tell Y! sports
nba source strongly says it has nothing to do with AIs recent frustration over coming off bench and lack of minutes
another nba source tells y! iverson not expected to return to grizz due to frustration over reserve role and lack of communication w/hollins

$3.5 million
this is a crazy situation but it probably was handled badly from the day they signed him. they show a great lack of consciousness for not addressing this with AI from day one. if you have as big a risk in your plan as AI then you do everything in your power to avoid the worst case scenarios that are now unfolding. I don’t think they did ANYTHING.
They shall reap what they sow, but let’s hope they have some good things growing on the other side of the locker room. Hopefully Tuesday a different team will take the floor.
But I won’t hold my breath ever for the Grizzlies.

Until...
This team can commit at least one starter to defense, they aren’t going anywhere. Our offensive efficiency is 8th in the league, defensive is dead last, about 3 points per 100 possessions worse than the Kings.

Well...
I personally feel like he’s also got a little bit of ‘once bitten twice shy’ to deal with after his later career in Philly, Denver unexpectedly trading him, and the huge lie in Detroit.
Both parties are to blame, but at this point it might not help to point fingers anyhow.

The pistons insisted
that Iverson left the team for injury reasons, not attitude reasons. Yeah right.
Somebody in his family obviously has a back injury.

gibson guitar
I think he should give back the guitar publicly. what a farce.

I want a win against Portland tonight. Otherwise I’m regretting buying league pass BB this year! (I watch all their games from afar)
