what're the actual odds that rudy gay gets dealt this season? and if it does happen what would chris wallace really expect in return considering his history

as a fan of a team that has been on the wrong side of a few miserable chris wallace trades (VIN F"%*g BAKER comes to mind) i feel your pain on the ridiculous kwame brown for pau gasol fleecing, especially since it helped the hated lakers... but if your not going to keep gay then im assuming it won't take all that much to pry him loose too... oh and as a side bar can he play well off the bench? as a 4?

as i said an interested party very much interested in aquiring a legit small forward to play 25 min. a night to help ours guard the lebrons and rashard lewis' of the world

Well, answer by numbers here...

1. I don’t think the Grizzlies are looking to trade Rudy Gay at all unless they were blown out of the water. I would put the chances of it happening at well under 10%. The Grizzlies are doing what the Hawks have been doing; they discovered that you have way more leverage when a player is in restricted free agency than when they’re going for an extension.

Rudy declined a 5 years $50 million extension; he wanted 5 years $60 million. Somebody could offer him that much, yes, but it’s more likely that he won’t get any offers that large, so why would the Grizzlies sign him early as opposed to waiting and matching a potentially smaller deal?

2. The Pau Gasol trade seemed awful initially, but it’s been nowhere near as bad as advertised. The main piece was Marc Gasol, not Kwame Brown. After the fallout of the cap space, we basically traded Pau for Zach Randolph and Marc. Not that awful.

3. If he was off the bench, he would be a better Travis Outlaw, but I’m assuming he wouldn’t be very engaged or happy with that situation. Motivation is a concern for Rudy, and he wouldn’t be motivated as a 6th man.

4. Statistically he plays extremely poorly as a 4.

5. I think trading for him is difficult because the Grizzlies would want more than any team would offer if they were planning on using him off the bench, especially since he would likely leave said team next summer since they stuck him on the bench.

The only way I see Rudy Gay traded would be a sign and trade in the off season.

Dallas has a huge asses called the Dampier Expiring Contract. Any team can aquire him and waive him, paying $0. A trade can go like:
Rudy Gay, signed at 6.5 Mil, just like Shawn Marion
Marco Jaric, deadweight contract
for Dampier and Barea(if his team option is accepted)

Yeah, except I don't think we'd trade him just for payroll relief (plus Barea).

I think the only way we’ll sign and trade this offseason is for a top 10 or higher draft pick, another talent of similar caliber, or huge cap flexibility and a few decent draft picks.

Cap flexibility just isn’t extremely helpful for the Grizz because, well, nobody wants to play in front of under 10,000 people in Memphis. You’d have to WAY overpay any free agent to come. I guess trades for guys like Z-Bo are helpful, but salary dump players are also always overpaid and normally are pretty limited in what they can do.

A Yahoo team report notes the following quote from Rudy:

“People are going to know in the future we’re going to be one of the better teams in the West.”

Being part of a young nucleus may be enticing for him when it comes time to negotiate again. However, he should also note that he plays for a team that people don’t really notice. I don’t know that he can command his way out of the city at a 15 million per year rate just yet.

On that note, I don’t think Chris Wallace moves Rudy just yet. He doesn’t have the exposure needed to net a return close to what he should demand.
