Rain Dance: Grizzlies Beat Phoenix Suns 125-118

The Grizzlies don't get many shots at exposure to the national audience, in fact today was their only game on TNT or ESPN this season.

Playing against the Phoenix Suns, who have been off to a hot start this season but are quickly fading, the Grizzlies are going to force the NBA to start scheduling them a little more often. The Suns and the Grizzlies played a thrilling shoot-out tonight for the NBA's MLK marathon, and the Grizzlies didn't fail to impress -- besides wearing the atrocious alternate uniforms.

Rudy Gay, in particular, smiled for the camera, lighting up a mix of Grant Hill, Jason Richardson, and Jared Dudley for 31 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Zach Randolph got his usual also, dropping 27 and 11 boards for his requisite double-double. And O.J. Mayo was hot too, pouring in 28 points with 5-11 from deep.

The Suns, obviously, scored well too. Steve Nash paced them with his 12 dimes and 22 points, though he had slippery hands, losing 6 turnovers. Amare Stoudamire's impact was limited, but Robin Lopez stepped up with a big 19 points and 3 blocks in the starting lineup. Strangely enough Channing Frye barely saw the court and, despite losing, the Suns might want to keep Robin starting if he's going to play like this.

The Grizz's hot scoring almost wasn't enough, they were up by 11 and quickly saw their lead cut to 3 by the Suns tough defense late in the game. But Marc Gasol played Z-Bo and hit clutch free-throws to keep them in the lead at the buzzer.

More on this game later, it's a busy day after moving just a couple days ago, but for now just keep waving that blue flag.

I was really impressed with Carroll in that second half.

He played like an absolute madman out there, rebounding, diving into the stands, hitting his foul shots. We could use more of that from him (which he’s shown lately). The only thing I didn’t like was his turnovers and he took a weird little fade-away shot there that didn’t go, kind of wasted a possession.

Hey Fox Sports Midwest, please fire Al Hrabosky.

I just wish the Grizzlies would get more national exposure.

Having a good year and only the Memphis area is really seeing it. I never get to watch their games because I live in Saint Louis, so I’m always stuck getting highlights online.

He shoots that shot...

Sort of a lot, sometimes for no reasons. He’s just not that comfortable on offense, but I think it’ll come quickly as long as he’s getting time.

Shot clock violations

To me, the most signficant stat of the game was the fact that the Grizzlies forced the Suns into at least two shot clock violations. Whether that is a credit to our defense or in total inability of the Suns to play in anything other than high gear is unsure, but there were stretches where we were imposing our will on them on both ends of the court, and if not for surpise productivity from Lopez and Amundson (who scored I think 28 points on probably 10 layups in about 15 attempts), this would have been another 20+ point margin game! That’s impressive!
