Puzzling Pieces: Grizzlies Destroyed by Utah Jazz Again

The Memphis Grizzlies could do no right tonight, and that's not what we want to see.

Grizzlies fans were probably ready for these guys to overcome all adversity and collect another big win tonight. They were probably waiting for Zach Randolph to get over 20-10 another time.

Didn't happen, and if you haven't watched the Grizzlies lately then you're in for a surprise: they're still very, very much a basketball team on the rise; the Grizzlies aren't anywhere near elite yet, and it showed tonight.

More over the jump that will attempt to explain just how incredibly horrendous this outing was. Just a preview, by the way, C.J. Miles scored 24 points. Yes, it was exactly that terrible of night.

Star-divide

And as if the defensive end wasn't bad enough even without Deron Williams playing a single minute for the Jazz, the Grizzlies played just as terrible on offense. The Jazz ran the Grizzlies out of the building, capitalizing on the fact that they were probably tired as hell from last night's thriller against the Blazers.

The Grizzlies shot just over 40% from the field; Marcus Williams capitalized on all the extra playing time tonight by going 1-9. Mike Conley, Rudy Gay, and O.J. Mayo really didn't do much better. Rudy got suckered into shooting every jumper that he shouldn't shoot, while Mike Conley looked completely over-matched by such All-Star names as Ronnie Price and recent D-League call-up Sundiata Gaines.

I mean I feel good for you and all Sundiata, and I love the name, but you can't just be making Mike Conley look foolish. Don't you know who he is? He's Mike "Fratty Tony Parker" Conley.

If you didn't remember the Jazz absolutely shutting down Marc Gasol vividly enough, then feel free to edit together a YouTube of these two night's non-highlight reels. Gasol scored 4 points. He had 5 boards, also 5 fouls, and 4 turnovers.

To get back to the defensive end, Carlos Boozer had 20 points -- in 25 minutes. C.J. Miles, as I mentioned earlier, had a team and career high 24. Ronnie Brewer had 10 assists and 4 steals. Andre Kirilenko went vintage AK-47 (too soon after Gilbert incident?) with 12 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. Yes, the Jazz were actually toying with the Grizzlies.

And what's the worst part of all of this? The Grizzlies play the Jazz again Friday night. Let's hope the rest does them well.

If there was ever such a thing as a strategic loss this was it.

No problem. I’m glad we lost.

Really.

This game was the second game of a back-to-back-on-the-road, four game road trip. Very few NBA teams bring the same energy in this situation, especially in January, especially after a grueling come back victory the night before.

The Grizzlies get an overconfident Utah team in Memphis Friday night.

ouch

that one hurt. However, the Lakers got blown out by Phoenix, showing that even elite teams have terrible nights. Back end of a back-to-back, Utah desperate for a win at home after a losing streak, Memphis needing to come down off the high after a number of emotional wins in a row… this game had all the ingredients for disaster. Let’s hope they can rebound Friday to get back above .500.

True that even elite teams get blown out...

But not like this, especially with the other team’s best player out.
