Sell Outs: Grizzlies Come Back to Beat Lakers 95-93

If I read one story about this game that so much as mentions Kobe Bryant in the title, unless a derivative of the word "lose" is in there too, I think I'm going to put my hand through my laptop screen.

Why? Because Kobe isn't the story tonight. He tried really, really hard to be the story, scoring 44 of his Lakers points, but he's not the story.

The Grizzlies winning against a full-strength Los Angeles Lakers at home and in front of a sold-out crowd is the biggest news, especially to all the fans who supported their team by rocking their purple and gold to cheer for losing visitors.

Rudy Gay came back in style, oftentimes making supposed lock-down defender Ron Artest look foolish en route to 25 huge points, mostly coming at key points right at the start and finish. Zach Randolph got 22 with 17 rebounds despite playing against both Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, two heads of the monster many consider the deepest trio of bigs in the league.

But the gameball just might belong to one native Memphian who wasn't wearing a scrap of Lakers colors tonight, waiver wire pickup Lester Hudson. Who cares that Huddy got a little wild with his shot selection when he hit the court for his second stint off the bench? For a few fleeting minutes it looked like the Grizzlies had lost their steam, until Hudson took the court and dropped a couple threes to pull the capacity crowd right back into the game.

Any yes, one of them was right in Kobe Bryant's eye. I'm calling that the story of the night.

Star-divide

Huddy might never have even entered the game had Sam Young not been out with an allergic reaction -- maybe he had to pass the ball in practice -- and nobody thought that without him the Grizzlies traditionally horrendous bench could hold up to the Lakers's championship depth.

The whole crew held up decently though, scoring 21 points (Hudson had 13) to make up for lackluster production from O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol, who were held in check by foul trouble caused by defending Kobe and Pau Gasol, respectively. It was one of the first times this season that the Memphis Grizzlies looked like they didn't have enough weapons on the floor.

The Lakers didn't have as many weapons show up as usual either, though. Ron Artest had a solid 18 points, but otherwise starters Pau Pau, Derek Fisher, and Andrew Bynum combined for only 17 more. Super substitute Lamar Odom couldn't do much either, scoring just 4 points and failing to convert on a huge layup in the final minutes.

Because Lamar missed that layup and then got over the back on Zach Randolph, who hit both free throws, the Grizzlies had the lead. But Phil Jackson cleverly resisted calling a timeout with the Lakers down 4, instead opting to have Kobe take it coast to coast to bring it within one possession.

On the return trip Rudy nailed a three, only to see Kobe match his three with a friendly roll-in from deep of his own. Mike Conley got the ball and was intentionally fouled by Fish, prompting myself and the rest of Grizzlies nation to groan while he missed both of his free -- more on his limitations tomorrow. It didn't matter, however, because OJAM pestered Kobe, let Marc switch onto him to guard the shot with his huge wingspan, and then Kobe kicked it out to Ron Artest to take the potential game-winner.

He missed. The Grizzlies took this enormous momentum swing, the Lakers were brought back to earth, and I have a feeling Lester Hudson's going to be sitting in the front of the plane on the way to Cleveland tonight.

Extra storylines not mentioned...

1. The refs were absolutely horrendous, just rolling over for Kobe’s whining.

2. Is Lester Hudson legit? He looked great for 6 minutes and terrible for 6 minutes.

3. Mike Conley is barely better than Derek Fisher, and probably has less upside. Mike is 22, Fish is 35.

MVP?

Frontline defense.

Odom, Bynum, and the Lesser Gasol combine for 19 and 26?

Marc with only 11, but 13 boards? HUGE. Rudy came up big tonight, really good to see after two horrible games. Glad to see him stepping up his late game play lately.

Conley’s gotta go. No question. No hesitation. Gotta go.

I don’t think Conley needs to go but he would be better suited coming off the bench.

by Charlie38104 on Feb 1, 2010 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

He has the skills to be a great scoring 6th man in my opinion, just not the mindset.

But if you had to give him up in the trade to get a better point guard, well, such is life.

Conley has said on his blog and the coach admits he doesn’t like being on the bench. He views himself as a starter. I think he’s better being the starter on a lottery team not the Grizzlies. He’s not a bench guy. I like him a lot but I thought we chose the wrong guy. Javaris Crittenton is much better physically and skill-wise. It’s too bad what has happened to his career in Washington….

Crittenton?

How about Kyle Lowry? He’s much further along now, though Crittenton did have undeniable athletic gifts.

Great call DJtf......

I think Kyle Lowry would be perfect for this squad right now. He’s turned in to a really good pass-first PG who doesn’t need to score, rebounds and plays some D. If you look at his stats now and average them out to starter’s minutes you’d get a perfect compliment to the scorers like Gay, Mayo and Z-Bo.

A poor man’s Jason Kidd is quietly growing in Houston (imho).

nice win

hey all, lakers fan here. just wanted to say i watched the game online (fox sports grizzlies) and wanted to commend your commentators on doing an excellent job calling the game. i don’t recall any homer-ism and the play by play guy is really good. didn’t hear much from the color guy, though.

good stuff and hope y’all make the playoffs with some momentum

by dimo on Feb 2, 2010 12:14 AM CST reply actions

Well......... Count me in.

As a lifelong fan of that championship team on the West Coast and a proud son of Espana, all I can do about tonight’s loss is offer up much respect to my Memphis brothers.

You’ve got a fine team there. A lot of heart and a lot of passion.

So I’m sold. Hope you don’t mind me jogging along behind the bandwagon hoping for a spot to clear so I can hop on. I’ll even make sure my Purple and Gold colors don’t show too much through all that Powdery Blue and White. You won’t be able to miss me. I’ll be the tan one rambling on about USC.

Good luck the rest of the season. Bet I’ll definitely be watching.

The Grizz are legit

Im just glad people are finally starting to realize that the deal you made with my lakers for pau was not a steal for us. You got Marc, who is a top center in this league. He was even in some of the all-star talks. And because you took on Kwame’s HUGE expiring contract for one year, you basically turned around and used his expiring money on Zach Randolph, who is looking very beastly this year. Definently deserving of his all-star selection. OJ is coming along nicely and Rudy is a star. Hope you guys can hold on to him, cuz if you get a decent shooting pg, you guys could be in the top 4 in the west. Not to mention, you guys still have to more draft picks from that laker trade this year (one form us and one from washington in the javaris trade).

I was impressed with ur team last night, even though i thought the lakers looked extremly tired.

And BTW, who the hell is lester hudson. He killed us last night in the second quarter.

Lester Hudson led the NCAA in scoring last season at Univ Tennessee Martin (not exactly a powerhouse…) and was the only pick of the Celtics in this year draft (2nd round). I forgot why they released him but we like to acquire some of their scraps (Darius Miles). Hudson missed his first 6 or 7 shots as Grizzlies and wore a scrimmage jersey his first night. But now he found himself and we desperately needed bench. he looks a lot better than Casey Jacobsen or Tarence Kinsey so far.

Clippers fan here...we at Clipsnation have always had an eye on the Grizz

and know that you have been legit for awhile now. I was sad to see ZBo go, especially after he worked so hard in the off season.

Cavs fan here

Your posters were correct (in the game thread) about the fouls…there were at least 3 against Kobe that should have been no calls and the T on Zach was way too reactionary…almost as if the refs were looking for a reason to call it..Your TV announcers walk a fine line between homerism and just calling it straight up..I thought they came down on the side of the latter…giving props to who ever deserved them but not backing away from the truth.(If you end up watching a Cavs feed online, be prepared…the color guy-Austin Carr-is very homer)
Of all the games the Cavs play leading up to the all star break, the one tonight (tuesday) is the one I’m most apprehensive about and the one I think will tell Cavs fans how far the Cavs have come in terms of team play..That IS how the Grizz beat LA last night..by making sure Kobe had the ball in his hands most of the time…same way they beat the Cavs/LeBron back in December…Too bad you don’t have more people posting…Memphis has a great YOUNG team and should be supporting them in every way possible…Good luck tonight!

and i hope you guys can get more fans in SOV (straight outta vancouver).

its got to be frustrating to be putting all this work into this site and only having a couple people post on it.

When did this site start BTW?

build it and they will come....

I basically started it on SBNation in August...

So no fanbase moved over, it wasn’t around for much of offseason (like Randolph trade and draft) besides signing Allen Iverson.

Plus it’s tough goings as a Grizzlies blog because the fanbase doesn’t really have a strong “blog culture.” I get decent hits for small market NBA team on SB Nation, just people don’t really have the desire to get on and comment.

It’s getting much, much better these last couple weeks, though.

And it’s not really frustrating because we get solid hits, just commenting and fanposts and fanshots aren’t super popular.

Any grizz fans watching the cavs game tonight...

beware, the cavs color men (Fred Mcloed and Austin Carr) are possibly the most homer of any commentators out there. Watching the first quarter of the cavs V clips when they scored 46 was a horrible experience for me as a Cavs fan. I’m ashamed to be from ohio and have to listen to them every night.

For those of you looking to get hammered though, check out the Austin Carr drinking game (rules online), and you’ll be passed out by midway through the 2nd.

Hopefully another good game tonight like last time.

Those guys are total homers but they do it in a manner that to me is funny.
