Ronnie Brewer Traded to Grizzlies

We are hearing from the Salt Lake Tribune, or more accurately the Twitter account of their beat writer, that the Utah Jazz have traded Ronnie Brewer to the Memphis Grizzlies for a protected first round draft pick in the 2011 draft.

It's not altogether clear what the protection on the pick is, however, so it's difficult to assess the trade from the Jazz's standpoint.

But we do know that Ronnie Brewer has long been a desired trade target for Memphis because of his ability to play both the 2 and 3 positions with near-equal efficiency. That should allow O.J. Mayo and Rudy Gay some much needed rest, because Sam Young has not been able to log significant enough minutes as the 6th man on a competitive team.

Star-divide

On the defensive end, Ronnie Brewer brings the Grizzlies a fundamentally sound defender who also gambles very successfully, his steal numbers are fantastic, and has great size for both positions. He's also an excellent rebounder for a shooting guard, given his size, and can bang with small forwards.

Offensively Ronnie Brewer is a bit of a mixed bag. He's a decent from mid-range but a poor outside jump-shooter, has mediocre handles, and isn't known to create his own shot particularly well. That being said, his athleticism is top-notch, he's a first-rate finisher, and his shooting percentage is typically above average for a guard because of his excellent shot selection.

Additionally this trade should vastly improve the Grizzlies current and future flexibility. With Darrell Arthur back and logging decent minutes and the addition of Ronnie Brewer, Coach Lionel Hollins should be able to experiment with some more creative rosters. Especially intriguing is the possibility of O.J. Mayo logging more minutes at point guard with Brewer in at shooting guard.

Next season should, god forbid, Rudy Gay get a big deal that Heisley is unwilling to match, Ronnie Brewer will provide the Grizzlies with a much cheaper fill-in option in RFA. While Brewer certainly can't score on the perimeter or create his own offense like Rudy, he is arguably a better defender.

If the Mike Conley trade rumors were true, he also provides the option of Memphis moving forward with O.J. Mayo at the point, Brewer at shooting guard, and Rudy Gay playing small forward.

Overall this trade has to be seen as an absolute coup d'etat for the Grizzlies, who've not only weakened a competitor in the Western Conference, but also secured a young player already easily capable of being the 5th best player on a very competitive squad.

Very happy...

I’ve definitely come to the conclusion that I prefer this to Roger Mason Jr., if only because of the future flexibility it allows the Grizz.

Ronnie is a much better long-term asset, whereas Roger Mason Jr. would have essentially been trading away a asset (albeit of limited, long-term value) for just one year of production.

Much better than Dorell Wright also, because Brewer is ready to seriously contribute right now. While Wright has the potential to be excellent in the long-term, Ronnie B is solid both today and in the future.

Love it

Great move! Now, to unload Conley and we’re in business…

Awesome.

Definitely an upgrade to the bench. Or maybe OJ takes over the point with him at 2 and Rudy at 3 during times when Hollins gets fed up with Conley? Could be sick.

I like it....

If nothing else we got better on Defense I am worried about the offense with him though A lot of his scoring is cuts to the basket and put backs and I don’t see either of those happening very often with how Coach Hollins runs the offense but it is a wait and see, and the kid can play ball.

You're right offensively...

He’s definitely benefiting from awesome looks from D-Will. Still I think his game would work well in the high-post sets we run with Marc and Z-Bo passing.

The Grizz scare me a bit

part of me still believes this should be a 5th to last place team, but another part of me wants to believe the .500 hype. So the fact that they traded a protected approx 1-12 makes me a bitch edgy because I wouldn’t know where the Grizz’s would land 2 years from now. Because I don’t watch the Grizz’s everyday, what have you seen djturtleface? Seems as if the Grizz has been getting things in check as of late. Pau- I mean Marc Gasol is becoming a better player than anyone has imagined, and Zach becomes an overly powering scoring threat.

BTW, what kind of contract would the Grizz’s NOT match for Gay this coming FA season?

I think that the protection is clever...

For several reasons, but I’m going to be writing a longer post about it today.

As far as matching a Rudy Gay contract, it’s speculation at this point. The Grizzlies offered 5/$50 million in the offseason, Rudy wanted 5/$60. I do believe that the Grizzlies will pay him 5/$60 in RFA, but I’m not confident that they’ll match a max contract offer.

.500 hype?

they were well over .500. it wasn’t just hype or hubbub that they “could be” .500. They have been there all of 2010.

Heisley is going to try to give Rudy a contract like LeMarcus Aldridge got. I think that is the ceiling.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Danny Granger should be models...

And I have no problem with Rudy getting paid like those two.
