Smashing Records: Grizzlies Send Hasheem Thabeet to D-League
Hamed Haddadi had a stellar night last night, and that's exactly what rookie center Hasheem Thabeet did not want to watch from the bench in Washington, D.C.
Today Ridiculous Upside broke the story that Grizzlies brass has decided to send Hasheem Thabeet to the NBA Developmental League. Because of Memphis's depth at center, it's likely that as long as Hamed Haddadi plays well, Thabeet would see little action.
Rookie waiver-wire pickup Lester Hudson, drafted then released by the Boston Celtics, will also be sent to the D-League. He also shows significant promise as a bench scorer, but lacks the awareness needed to earn minutes for this successful Grizzlies team.
Thabeet and Hudson will be playing for the Dakota Wizards, which is the closest thing to a minor league team for the Memphis Grizzlies. As the #2 player selected overall in this year's NBA Draft, Thabeet will also take the record for being the highest draft pick to ever play in the D-League.
But Thabeet's stay in the D-League might not last long, as Ridiculous Upside adds this information to the story:
The Dakota Wizards will play 7 games in the next 13 days before having a week off, leaving me to assume that Thabeet would be recalled at that time.
I like this move for the Grizzlies, even though it's bound to look horrible for an organization that is just beginning to regain its respect around the league. While the D-League certainly benefits from the attention this move will earn them, this has to kill any trade value Hasheem Thabeet might hold.
One distinct positive, though, is that sending both Huddy and Hasheem to the D-League could be a signal that the Grizzlies are interested in adding a late-season free agent. Several players are rumored to be negotiating buyouts, for instance Larry Hughes, that could fill a gap for the Grizzlies until Ronnie Brewer's return.
I know it sounds awful, but this move has been a long time coming. To me there's no question why this happened right after the trade deadline: nobody wants a D-League center, so once the time to shop him is over, he's fair game to be sent down.
Still, egos and trades aside, Thabeet is much better suited to develop with a lower level of competition than the NBA. The professional game clearly moves too fast for Thabeet, who even struggled at times in college. He will be able to better understand the fundamentals at a slower pace.
My one concern, though, is that the quality of coaching will probably significantly decline in the D-League. I don't know much about it, but I'm guessing the Dakota Wizards don't pay a high-caliber professional big man coach.
Fans need to remember that Thabeet might have been obviously was a mistake to draft that high, especially with his questionable work ethic and attitude since coming into the Association, but he's not done as a player. The kid has incredible physical talents. Incredible.
The problem is that he doesn't play basketball. Hopefully going to the D-League will teach him that if you can touch the top of the backboard, there's no need to try to block a shot at the other player's hands below the rim. Hopefully he'll learn how to cut through the back-door, and, more importantly, defend against cutters. Hopefully it will teach him how to actually play the game.

Just thinking about it...
But this really could be a sign that the Grizzlies are looking to hit late-season free agency up with the rest of the competitive teams.

As a Clevelander...
That made me giggle. I watched the game where he shot on his own hoop for the triple-double.

Perverse curiosity
Do you think another player would have been more beneficial to the Grizz long term health?
No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
I'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being. He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves. -- Aykis 16
Wait...
More than Thabeet? Yes.

I should have been more clear about what I meant: Which players?

I don't think there's an easy answer.
As much as I love Reke, it’s very difficult for me to see how Reke & Mayo gets along in the same backcourt.

Don't you think...
That if Reke was ‘born’ into the Grizzlies system he might not be nearly so fantastic, but could play a slightly different brand of basketball?
I mean, O.J. Mayo isn’t quite like Kevin Martin, since he’s really the Grizzlies only spot-up, non-isolation option (though he isolates sometimes as well). He only has the ball in his hands so often because Mike is really bad.
Also, Tyreke’s defense can’t be overlooked, since even if he wasn’t great on offense, he would still fill a huge hole on D. That kid has All-Defensive First Team potential.

Yo Gotti!!!!
Memphis is a tight city.I was surprised that Memphis’s scouts didnt realize that the 2nd best player entering the draft(Griffin was dominating at the time) was playing college ball in Memphis. How could they not see the kid? Maybe they watched TOO much of him in college. i dont know. But the kid could ball.
CAN*** ball
and im talking about Tyreke Evans if you dont know. which hopefully you do.
Here's my imput on the situation
Im not djturtleface, especially when it comes to Memphis, so you might have a better claim from him, but originally Rubio was projected #2. My assumption (yes ass-out-of-u-and-me) is that originally Memphis did want to make Rubio their second pick. But when Rubio expressed his opinions about not wanting to play for Memphis, Memphis decided to take another route. So Memphis is left with 2 choices. Why take a sg when you have OJ, and Gay is still retainable because he’s a SF. Tyreke wasn’t projected too early, roughly around 4-10 in the projects I saw, and Memphis didnt really need a pg at the time, especially with Conley showing signs of potential. So with Conley, seems they have a pass first pg to set up OJ and Gay.
So the next best bet that the team needed help in was their inside presence. Thabeet dominated college with his length and defense. He was a blocking machine. Some compared him to Zo and his massive blocks. (Not to get it confused with Zo and his offense, as Thabeet clearly lacks.) With time, people assumed Thabeet can develop his offense (which is still very possible.)
But who’s to say Thabeet is a bust? It’s barely his first year, and he was brought in mostly for one reason, rebound and block, and so far, he’s not given enough time.
Then again, my question is, if Reke was brought into Memphis, would he be as successful as he would be on the Kings right now? Would he even be considered in the ROY list? Sure he’s talented, but maybe there was a reason Martin was traded…And this is NOT bashing Memphis. This goes the same for every single team, especially my Clippers (which could have possibly made his career worse…)
I agree 110%...
waaaaay too small of a sample size to start calling somebody a bust. thabeet is where he needs to be and i still like the pick. we knew what we were getting when we drafted him and i still think he can be a dominant defensive force, and hopefully offensive, one day. give him some time. and no way can we start praising how great evans, curry, or jennings, etc. are and dreaming of how much better the griz would be w/them. they’re still rookies… long way to go b4 they deserve to be crowned! and AT LEAST the brass didn’t put themselves into a position of begging rubio to come play.
i guess if thabeet is as bad as conley is after the same amount of years in the league, we can call him a bust. but, let’s give him some time to develop b4 we write him off.

Yeah, the problem was...
That lots of people were predicting this would be a breakout year for Mike Conley and the management still wasn’t sure if Tyreke would ever be a PG.
I mean, I thought all along Tyreke was the pick because he and O.J. could just share PG duty and Reke could D up the bigger guard (normally SG).
Some people say, and I believe, that Michael Heisley (our owner) called in the Thabeet selection and that the basketball people (GM Chris Wallace, coaches, etc.) all wanted Tyreke. I think Calipari even called the Grizz and asked for them to pick Reke.

If that's the case every Kings fan should be thanking Michael Heisley right now.

very possible
because I believe they had already planned for AI during the draft. They picked no players that could take time away from Allen Iverson as well. Even if OJ moved to PG then AI has SG. No room for any guards on the team. Just room to bring in a second rounder. who then of course has had to step up as our 6th man all year long (Sam Young). Hilarious. The real failure was the stOOOPID draft lottery which was rigged so that the 2 teams that tanked the year before to get the last 2 places (Boston and Memphis) were slapped with the #4 and #5 picks (the lowest they could possible get) and #1 #2 was given to Seattle and Portland to stop NBA from leaving the northwest entirely (a total failure since Greg Oden has been a bust and Durant moved to OKC). And a failure sicne Boston said “F U” and traded Green immediately for Ray Allen and Big Baby. Unfortunately Memphis was the recipient of the greatest punishment from draft by missing the player they needed more than anyone in the draft (Al Horford). And it’s still a wonder when they will give up on that draft pick and realize that first mistake that has led to now a string of domino effect failures. only made up by the savior ZBO
I feel as if many people
are forgetting the reason Thabeet was drafted so early out of college. As everybody knew already, Thabeet was a defensive presence that led his UCONN team very far into March Madness. Taken that into consideration, Thabeet was never really known for offense. In a way, he’s the opposite of Blake Griffin. BG dominated, and I MEAN dominated, college because of his athletism and his ability to score. Thabeet led his team with defense, being a strong inside force against opposition players. Oppsing team players didn’t like to drive into the paint with Thabeet guarding inside.
So with that in mind, I think Thabeet has done a poor job, but NOT a "bust’ job as everybody is predicting as Thabeet is clearly blocking (1.2 in 10 mins) and somewhat rebounding (2.9).
Just my 2 cents. Look at it this way, atleast the #2 pick is scoring more points than the #1 pick this season. =)
But...
The problem with calling out his per minute block stat is that his per-minute foul rate is practically the highest in the league. I think his PF per 36 minutes is like 9 or so.

At least he'll get PT in the D-League
He was suited up at the Verizon Center last night, though of course he didn’t play. Seemed to be dragging his (right?) leg somewhat whenever he got up during the timeouts.
On Twitter he has been saying something about rehab.
But there was never any official injury reports or anything.
