Are the Grizzlies and Timberwolves Trading Picks?
In case you haven't typed "Memphis Grizzlies" into Google yet today, ESPN ran a rumor this morning that the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Grizz might be swapping first round draft selections.
The Grizzlies would be giving up picks 25 and 28 -- the Nuggets' and Lakers' picks -- for the 16th overall pick, which the Timberwolves have rights to from the Charlotte Bobcats.
This deal seemed a little fishy from the beginning, since it was originally reported backwards, and still would be a curious fit. The Timberwolves already have three first round picks -- numbers 4, 16, and 23 -- which means they don't exactly need a fourth.
Additionally, trading multiple picks to move up more than a selection or two is fairly uncommon in the NBA. On occasion a team might include a second-rounder to bounce up a pick or two, but according to normal draft values the 28th pick hardly seems valuable enough to bump the Grizzlies all way into the mid-first round.
One scenario where this might fit, however, is if the T-Wolves were planning on using the Grizzlies selections in other deals. Selling both picks could net them around $6 million in cash, while selling just the 23rd would only make the Wolves $3 million. If the Wolves feel the financial need just to sell one pick, it might be worth it to keep three first rounders with the cash since their roster has so many holes.
My guess, then, is that the Grizzlies have approved the trade, especially since this team really doesn't have the minutes or roster space for three first rounders, and are waiting on the Wolves to see whether they need the extra first-rounder because of an unrelated deal. Either way, don't expect to see action on this before draft night.

Yeah, I have to agree with that.
There’s no way that trade would happen unless the Timberwolves wanted to trade those 2 picks in a package for something else.
The other thing is David Kahn and the Wolves have been talking to basically every team about every possible trade imagined and this could be just one of the many possibilities that they have looked at.
I've got a new kid I like..
I shouldn’t because we are never going to draft him, but….Hassan Whiteside. Take PG at 12 to be our SG,SF, move Mayo to PG and eventally take over for Conley and take Whiteside as backup PF at #16. He is a guard trapped in a PF body(shooting ability wise). Great defender. Has alot more star potential than PPatt. I don’t know why i’m getting my hopes up for him as Grizz have not been linked to him at all. Can you imagine him and Thabeet coming off the bench together? Only way teams would be able to score would be jumpers..I like our chances. Here’s a video..he’s also got that look of a star. Why do I do this? haha here’s a video… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AJFUB98qaM
In the end it’ll be PG and PPatt which I don’t mind. Just wish I had never started like Whiteside..
Whiteside has a baaaaad 'tude though...
Also I think you’re probably overrating his shooting and scoring. He looks pretty slick in highlight videos, but he’s also glaringly inefficient and overconfident.
Although I will say this, I do think you’re right on George. I think it’s going to be George – combo guard – then one pick gets traded.

Now reports are that Al Jefferson for Zach Randolph is a part of the deal.I love this deal if we don't give up the 12.
I would totally do Z-Bo and 25, 28 for Al Jeff and 16...

As would I..
that trade would be clear win for us, IMO. Expect this to be revisited tomorrow night. Also heard Grizz offering 25&28 for #19. I’d be willing to give Minny 19 with ZBo. Reason I dont give them 12 is that they want PG BADDDD. I don’t give them PG. One thing I do know is that tomorrow is going to be eventful…hopefully…
Big Al is locked up a lot longer...
And it’s hard for Memphis to keep unrestricted free agents without overpaying. That’s what tips it for me.
