Grizzlies Will Not Make Qualifying Offer to Ronnie Brewer

The exclusion of Ronnie Brewer's name from the official press release on Rudy Gay's qualifying offer surprised me, but it seemed reasonable to think it was just not front page news.

After all Ronnie Brewer only played a few games for the Grizzlies after a deal at the trade deadline. Fans hardly knew the shooting guard who doesn't really shoot, but specializes in defense and finishing around the rim.

GM Chris Wallace traded a future first round selection for Brewer, so it was assumed he was an asset the Grizzlies would retain. With the drafting of Xavier Henry, Brewer's minutes looked limited, but he could still be useful in a sign and trade. It's not inconceivable that he would be worth a late first rounder in return.

But today local radioman Chris Vernon talked to Wallace and found out that the Grizzlies will not even submit a qualifying offer to Brewer. So Ronnie Brewer will become an unrestricted free agent tonight at midnight, and the Utah Jazz will keep the Grizzlies's future first round pick after just five games played.

It should be noted that owner Michael Heisley has often promised to bring both Ronnie Brewer and Rudy Gay back next season. The seal on that promise might have just been officially broken.

There is almost no explanation for this move. Qualifying offers cost nothing to tender unless no other team is willing to match, and someone would have matched the one-year, $3.7 million offer. It is always smart to keep a player a restricted free agent because it gives leverage to either force a sign-and-trade or, at the bare minimum, at least complicate a rival's offseason.

If there's any reason to just let Brewer walk, it's that the Memphis front office was due to make at least one huge, blatant mistake this offseason.

Why trade for Brewer if you aren't going to tender him the QO?

I don't get it. It makes no sense...

Obviously you want to get Xavier Henry as many minutes as possible, but it’s completely free to sign and trade him to a team with some cap space.

I literally don’t think there is any way to justify this move. I honestly wonder if they even fully understand how restricted free agency works.

Are you sure the Grizzlies still exist?

Moves like this make me question that idea.

Hey, like I said...

They have to make AT LEAST one infuriating, idiotic mistake every offseason.

We wouldn’t love them otherwise. (OK, yes we would, even more actually…)

Heisley is now the Memphis version of Chris Cohan.

Only, the Grizz weren’t around long enough to make them progressively worse as opposed to the Dubs with Cohan.

Why Lord?

Five games. For a first rounder! FIVE! I get the injury, but come on!

Especially infuriating is this free agent class is heavy on SFs. We could get a quality combo wing to pair with X and Brewer for a reasonable price! But instead, we’re going to blow our ass out for Rudy Gay and the pull-up 18 footer.

Gah! Do you see, DJ? THIS IS WHAT COMES FROM SUPPORTING THE RUDY RE-SIGN.

Re-Signing Rudy shouldn't have anything to do with it...

This is just plain stupid. It literally makes no sense from a cost-saving standpoint or basketball standpoint, because even if Brewer didn’t get a bigger offer, the Grizzlies could rescind the QO once they figure out how much they’ll have to pay Rudy. There was almost 0 risk involved. The only way you could get screwed is if Brewer preferred and agreed to 1 year, $3.7 million, then you still wanted to sign Rudy to the max after.

The only scenario that this makes sense in is if you believed that you could bring Brewer back for less than $3.7 million a year, which seems highly unlikely since he probably barely even remembers the directions to FedEx Forum.

I don’t necessarily want to keep Brewer — in fact I don’t want to at all — but he’s an asset that you can’t let escape, Rudy or no Rudy.

That this seems to be the case.

this is just plain stupid...

The grizz are in desperate need of versatile players like brewer. Not only that, he would expand the fanbase since he played at Arkansas and was a fan favorite. I have never seen a front office make so many stupid decisions. Its as if they are trying to sabotage a promising roster. Lets review some of the genius decisions made by this front office recently:

 1. Brewer – discussed above; very versatile – can arguably defend 4 positions and was a fan favorite at Arkansas which couldve helped to increase the fanbase.

2. Last years draft – they select Thabeet with the 3rd pick. i honestly vomited in my mouth when they made this pick. Any fool shouldve been able to tell that Thabeet is not ready to contribute in the NBA and I have my doubts that he ever will. He did nothing in college to even make you think he would be more than a backup and defensive replacement in the NBA. Not only that, Tyreke Evans, James Harden, Steph Curry, and Brandon Jennings were still on the board. I had thabeet graded in the 20-25 pick range. I honestly had Evans, Harden and Curry as 2-4 in the draft with Flynn 5 and jennings 7th. Could they have made a worse pick with so much talent left on the board?!?!? Literally AMAZING!!!

 3. They sign Rudy Gay to a max contract. He is a good player but not worth anywhere near what they paid him and I have my doubts about him being able to carry a team. I am hoping that they find a way to trade him so that this contract doesnt doom them for the next 5 years.

 4. In this year’s draft, they draft Henry who couldnt even create his own shot in college. Not only that, they sell their second 1st round pick for money when Pondexter was still on the board. Pondexter would have been a steal and he would be a great fit on this team. Then they go on to draft Vasquez who is too slow and unathletic to ever be anything more than a shooter off the bench. Why not package these three picks to move up and draft a difference maker like Monroe?? if not, at least draft Ed Davis who doesnt have so many question marks.

Anyways, I had to come on here and vent a little because I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what in the hell this front office is doing. Every move they make is dumber than the last and it appears as if they are trying to sabotage the damn organization. I really dont know what to think anymore.

Dismayed, Disgruntled and Fed-up Grizz Fan

I can feel you, I was just about this upset after drafting Thabeet last year...

But they’re trying to bring Brewer back on an extension, at least that’s what David Aldridge at NBA is saying…

And, yeah, it’s been a tough time, with the Thabeet draft and Gay being overpaid, but you got to keep believing man. They were the 2nd most improved team in the league last year and would have had a shot at playoffs if Brewer and Gasol didn’t get injured. This squad is still really, really young.

Give Xavier Henry the benefit of the doubt for now, Vasquez is questionable, but Xavier looks like he has a shot to be really good. He’s only 19, most freshman aren’t the focal points of their national championship contending teams.

Man I will keep believing and keep driving 3 hours...

5 or 6 times a year to watch em play. I want them to succeed badly so that Memphis may someday have a chance at an MLB or NFL team. I know it is a remote possibility but it certainly will never happen if the Grizz do not succeed.

That is what is sooo frustrating – they have a damn good roster and with a couple smart moves (and not making some of the stupid ones) they could be legitimate title contenders. They are only a piece or two away IMO.

Being from Arkansas and a HUGE Hog fan, I was dreaming that they would somehow end up with Joe Johnson. Anyways, i still believe but its hard when they continue to make poor decisions.

And I agree that I should reserve judgement on Henry...

He could definitely help and I shouldnt have bashed him. I just think they shouldve tried to trade up but they could have tried and not been able to. I also think Ed Davis wouldve been a smarter pick but behind him I guess Henry was the next best pick. I wish they wouldve considered Pondexter bc I really think he is going to be a baller

In all the mock drafts they have us do...

I took Davis and then Pondexter, too, actually, so I’m with you on that one. Supposedly they wanted Damion James (not Dexter) and when he got taken at 24 they decided to sell 25.

Interesting...thats some good drafting!! I wish you were our GM!!

I also wish I wouldve found this board a long time ago but late is better than never. I look forward to discussing more stupid decisions with you LOL (I hope not!)
