Memphis Grizzlies Sign Celtics Guard Tony Allen

Those who know me well know that Tony Allen is actually my second favorite Celtic, right behind Paul Pierce, and one of my favorite reserves in the league. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal's Grizzlies blog, the Grizzlies are signing Celtics guard Tony Allen to what's likely to be a 3 year, $10 million contract. The Grizzlies were expected to attempt to retain Ronnie Brewer, who they traded a first round pick for last season, but appear to have chosen Allen instead.

For several years the 6'4" swingman with a 6'9" wingspan was one of the worst Celtics in the rotation because of his raw offensive game, which was to be expected after being drafted 25th overall, but this past season Allen found his niche. He often took the court over free agent pickup Marquis Daniels, and excelled at guarding the other team's best isolation scorer, especially LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Allen is expected to remain a defensive specialist in Memphis, though he is also known for high-flying dunks and effective finishes around the basket. He is essentially a slightly less gifted Ronnie Brewer, but will likely be significantly cheaper than Brewer.

For that reason the Grizz will likely be pandered for effectively giving away the first-round pick traded to the Jazz, but its important to remember that the front office could not have predicted Brewer would have a season ending injury in his first game. Had Brewer actually played for the Grizz, he would likely be returning. Since he did not, the Grizzlies drafted Xavier Henry and no longer need to spend the full MLE for another swingman.

With the number of wings on the roster, it's difficult to anticipate the role Allen might play on the team. With O.J. Mayo and Rudy Gay as starters, and Xavier Henry likely to play at least 16-20 minutes at either position in reserve, it's likely that Allen will be used mostly in discretionary situations, such as to cover shooters with a particularly hot hand. Or it could forebode a future move, O.J. Mayo has been on the trading block before.

Great signing..

I liked Brew alot, but TA was much cheaper and more experienced. I actually like it more than if we would have payed alot for Brew, This saves us some money to possibly go after a backup 4. Lou Admunson would be excellent. I think this signing guarantees playoffs. I think TA gets plenty of PT. And no OJ will not be traded. Quit that nonsense. This is just a move to solidify a playoff run.

OJ/Conley/Vazquez/Allen
X/Allen/Young
Rudy/X/Young/Carroll
Randolph/Arthur
Gasol/Thabeet/Haddadi

Hollins isn't starting OJ at point any time soon...

Even though the roster setup you’re showing is definitely ideal from a minutes standpoint, can we really expect O.J. Mayo to transition from one of the worst passing starting SG’s in the league to a point guard for a playoff team in the offseason?

I agree that it needs to happen, but unless Mayo blows the coaches and the front office away, they just don’t seem too excited to play him there this season.

And Tony Allen cannot play the point under any circumstances either. Have you seen him try to dribble?

I believe in OJ

He has the mindset that he wants to be the best PG no matter what…and I believe him. I guess how we will see how it goes starting tonight. This team, eventually, has the most potential with OJ at point.

BTW, I doubt Allen ever plays point with us, but he did play point with the Celtics before they acquired Nate.

Yeah, I think OJ can do it too...

But they will probably let him learn as a backup for at least most of the season, since Conley is on contract anyhow. Then if O.J. does well in 10ish minutes, they’ll be able to leverage Conley’s contract down next offseason.

Also Tony shared a backcourt with Ray Allen, who was actually handling the ball; neither were really playing the point though. Its just a quibble anyhow, just depends on how you want to fill out the roster card.

one of the worst?

I guess Doc Rivers is a bad coach then for starting Tony Allen 82 games in his career – if he’s one of the worst guys on the team. That was silly having him as Paul Pierce’s backup all these years I guess.

I’m guessing he will likely backup Gay and X will backup OJ. sorry I love to pick apart your words some times. I just thought Tony Allen deserves higher praise than “one of the worst” Celtics. I mean one of the worst would have been Darius Miles or Gabe Pruitt. dang! or how about Gerald Greene? The Worst! :)

Noted: It should be worst rotation players...

Realistically those Boston teams were pretty bad and so was Tony Allen. Rookie year, 2004-05 they made playoffs, but he only averaged 12 minutes in playoffs. 05-07 he played more but for bad teams and only like 80 games in 2 seasons. 07-09 he plays a whopping 4 then 6 minutes in playoffs (read: garbage time).

Reading Simmons and some other Boston blogs, I’m pretty sure many, many Boston fans were fed up with Allen until this season. I actually really like him, but he was their 7th through 9th man until his last year there. It’s not a knock. He was raw.

And to your point, the more I think about it, you’re probably right that he’ll spend most of his time at SF. X for OJ and him for Rudy fits our existing offensive sets better since he’s the finisher and X is the shooter.

Hey, Bulls fan here

Any chance you would trade OJ Mayo to the Bulls? What would it take to get it done?

by SalgadoLord on Jul 12, 2010 3:47 PM CDT reply actions

Rose for Mayo would definitely be accepted
