Grizzlies 2011 First Round Pick Traded to Timberwolves via Utah Jazz

When the Grizzlies traded for Ronnie Brewer last year around the trade deadline, they gave up just their 2011 first round selection to the Utah Jazz. At the time it seemed like a good idea, but then Brewer tore his hamstring and was effectively out for the season. Now he's an unrestricted free agent, and Memphis replaced him with Tony Allen.

Looking back it wasn't such a great idea, since today the Jazz moved their 2011 first round pick, the Grizzlies 2011 first round pick, and a trade exception for young stud power forward Al Jefferson. And now a conference rival has improved. Ouch.

Not so fast, though. That Grizzlies pick is guarded rather heavily. Next year it will be protected through the entire lottery, so if the Grizz don't make the playoffs, they still get to draft. In 2012 it is top 12 protected, in 2013 it is top 10 protected, and in 2014 and 2015 it is top 9 protected.

The story is twofold for Grizz fans. First, Kahn is infinitely worse than even Heisley. Second, the T'Wolves will be picking instead of Memphis down the road, but have hardly grabbed a guaranteed star in return for Big Al.

LOCO LOBO

You mean a $14,000,000 salary player was traded for nothing? how is that even possible? For Pau we got what , four 1st round picks and Marc gasol? This is worse than the BIG Z for Antwane Jameson trade in which BIGZ was then released and sent back to Cleveland. oh wait. it’s not that bad. But if I was Utah I would wonder why they are willing to part with their best player for nothing? Could it be he’s injured so bad his career is over? I’m sure he had to pass a physical though. It doesn’t make any sense

The trade was just awful, he's not injured that bad...

His decline was way overstated. Averaged 17 and 10 last season, and everybody struggles off ACL injuries in first year.

And I’d say it was even worse than Jamison b/c at least the Cavs took a toxic contract. 20/10 Jefferson IS WORTH his $40 million over 3 years of his prime.

They got nothing b/c they positioned themselves so shitty. Everybody knew they were selling him with Darko and Kevin Love there long term, plus they openly commented they didn’t want Love and Jeff together, PLUS they took on Beasley which gave them yet another power forward and probably pissed off executives since it helped the Miami Supervillains.

They also got the 13 million trade exception Utah got for Boozer

Considering Utah used the TE with 2 mid to late 1st round picks for an allstar caliber player, shows it does have some value. I doubt they’ll get someone as good as Jefferson but they could use it with a team near the trade deadline who’s looking for some cap relief.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

Just bad news for the Grizzlies..

not because of the pick but because Utah is now one more team we have to worry about..

They had the PG year, now the SF year...

I’m hoping they go centers with ours and get a big African dude. DeSegana Diop 2.0

KOUFOS + DARKO!

I was wrong. They didn’t trade BIG AL for nothing. They got “significant assets” according to Jazz GM in return for Big Al. Kosta Koufos is a stiff that did not excel in college but got scouted as a top recruit along with BJ Mullens for reasons I can’t fathom. Both look like future car salesmen to me. Then they got not just one protected first round pick, but TWO! The potential for future role players and mentorees for Rambis or Brian Cardinal is abundant. Happy days in Sota

I think they could/should also be clients and spokesmen for Proactive.

Its like Kahn is intensionally sabotaging the Wolves…first McHale sold the farm now Kahn is killing the cattle and burning the barn.
