Rudy Gay Makes Team USA Cut, O.J. Mayo Does Not
After both practiced and played at a Team U.S.A. minicamp in Las Vegas over the last week, Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo have some clarity about who could play in Turkey for the FIBA World Championships this summer. Rudy will continue with the team to the next, 15-player minicamp in New York. O.J. Mayo is joining Tyreke Evans, Gerald Wallace, and JaVale McGee on the cut list.
Rudy will have to keep playing well if he wants to go to Istanbul, though. Another forward, Kevin Durant, is clearly the star of the team, and Danny Granger and Andre Iguodala are excellent players in their own right.
O.J. Mayo was pushed out by five point guards (Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook, and Stephen Curry) and Eric Gordon, the only other true "shooter" on the roster in Vegas.
All of these younger stars, with the exception of Chauncey Billups and Lamar Odom, have the opportunity to play in the World Championships this summer because none of the Olympic "Redeem Team" is playing with Team U.S.A. this summer.
I know the Blue-White Scrimmage is just a pinch of what Team U.S.A. bosses Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski use as an evaluation tool, but if the pickup game aired on ESPN2 had any bearing, it should be no surprise that Rudy Gay made the next team cut and O.J. Mayo did not.
For two years running Rudy has led the losing team in scoring. Grizzlies fans who've seen Rudy's shot selection in action might wonder if they're losing because Rudy's the leading scorer. That's not the case. They've lost because Rudy has played against Kevin Durant in both matchups, although this year he lined up against Andre Iguodala and seemed to be playing shooting guard more than forward.
Anyhow while Rudy looked good, O.J. looked pretty one dimensional. I know he scored 17 points, but 6 or so were breakaways off someone else's steal. Without those easy scores, O.J. pretty much left Coach K with several air-balls from a shorter international arc, no ball movement, and the worst defense of the guards.
Lots of people have wondered how Eric Gordon makes the team over O.J. Mayo. Look O.J. is a good player, but there is nothing about his game that screams, "Role Player." Yes, he would be an awesome 8th man in terms of pure talent in the NBA, but this is like a young-stars All-Star team. OJAM just doesn't bring the spot up shooting, toughness, or no-frills mentality of Gordon.
Mayo is, first and foremost, an isolation scorer. Unfortunately so is Kevin Durant. Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose score in isolation too. All three of those guys are better players, it's as simple as that.

Confused???
I’m curious so are you saying that OJ is not a true role player. Are you sayiing that he has to play a major part on any team that he is on? I’m truly confused about your assessment on OJ. Congrats to Rudy though.
Yes...
As in O.J.‘s skills, namely isolation scoring, aren’t really what you want from a 9-12th man on your team. You’d rather have someone who can jump in and hit a corner 3 who isn’t going to try to create.

It's not an uncommon thing for a scorer...
Like you wouldn’t want Ben Gordon as your 12th man, even if he can score a bunch. It’s just not a good fit because you’re not maximizing what they do well by playing them with 4 other players who are ahead of them in the pecking order.

Wrong...
OJ looked one-dimensional? What the hell do you call Gordon’s wide open 3pt shooting? He didn’t create for anyone or even himself. He just received kick outs.
OJ an iso player? He could be, but that’s not the case. Everything he got came within the flow of the game, same as it does with the Grizzlies. He got out in transition…who cares if it was from someone else’s steals? That’s usually how it works. And no one else was getting down the court and getting the easy ones so he deserves the credit. And if you actually watched the game, you would see that he is the one who actually poked some of those balls away and got the man rattled enough for the other guy to get the steal. If anything, this is what USA basketball has been all about recently. Running people out of the gym in transition because they’ve lacked a good halfcourt game.
Worst defense of the guards? Gordon, Curry, Rose, and Iggy all had good games. He wasn’t guarding all of those guys and several people who were at the game commended Mayo on his defense. He came off the bench and hit back to back baskets. Who the heck was guarding HIM?
He also had ZERO turnovers. That’s impressive considering how sloppy the blue team (namely Rudy, Westbrook, and Love) were playing. You can argue that the Blue team would have been able to make a game out of it had not Rudy been turning it over like crazy.
Notice also that the blue team didn’t even look respectable until Mayo checked into the game.
Durant an ISO player? You obviously do not watch the man play. Durant does not need the ball alot at all. He does alot of catching and shooting. That’s his strength. Not creating…so to say that he is an iso guy is just flat out wrong. Sure you can isolate him, but that could be said for pretty much every scorer on that team.
But anyway, back to Gordon and Mayo. Gordon’s 5-10 shooting with 4 being 3pters created by someone else isn’t one dimensional, but Mayo’s 7-12 which he collected on shots he mostly powered himself to is one-dimensonal? Oh and let’s not forget the 7 rebounds.
Agreed that Gordon was one dimensional, and even more one dimensional than Mayo...
But that’s exactly the point. That one dimension (just hitting open three’s and playing defense) is what you want from a 9-12th man.
I did watch the game, obviously, it’s stupid to even throw that accusation out there. The problem is that you’re acting like they made their picks for Team USA based on this game. That’s simply not the case.
O.J. Mayo’s resume indicates that he is an isolation scorer, a below average defender because of his size, and a high-volume shooter. These are not characteristics that are good for a deep bench player. It doesn’t matter whether Mayo actually was these things or not during a single scrimmage, because he has a rap sheet of being those things.
And as far as Durant not being an isolation player, you’re right that he’s no Carmelo Anthony, but he’s also not a spot shooter. In fact I’d argue he’s one of the most dynamic players in the league in terms of how he gets his buckets.
That’s not the point anyhow, because with a player as skilled as Durant, realistically those numbers are driven by the system. If he played in Memphis I’m sure his FGa% would be the exact same as Rudy Gay’s. But he is still THE MAN on this team. That means he will be creating his own shot at times and, as you mention, so will damn near every other player on the team. So why have the 11th man be trying to create for himself too?

Don't blame Gordon blame Rondo,Westbrook,Curry.
Mayo is not as good as Gordon on defense.Gordon has a good balance with Durant and Rose on spacing. He plays within himself and has the court sense to do what ever role it is to win. All the players like to play with him he gives consistency to the team.It is unfortunate that Mayo did not make the team, is he better than Rando, Westbrook or Curry?Gordon is the best shooter on the team his three’s were NBA not the intl ones.
Trust Me
Gordon and Mayo are both good players. But, both are terrible defenders.

Let’s get real here _ Eric Gordon is like a Mazda 6 but Mayo is a Porshe. They went with old reliable and cheap over world class talent. Good luck to them in Turkey.
In the long run we are arguing over players that might not make it out of New York anyway. Mayo was not going to replace Billups Curry or Westbrook so it doesn’t matter. Now he can focus on Memphis instead. Gordon is likely to be cut in New York.
Really?
REALLY? I’m not sure what it is that your trying to say. That Gordon, out of all the cars you can give, is Mazda and Mayo is a Porsche? REALLY? Because if so, that shows your heads DIRECTLY in the sand at this point, burried so deep in that the sun aint shining at all at your knowledge.
I still remember djturtleface comparison of Gordon and Mayo. To say that there is SUCH a GAP is not only a slap to the face, but an indication of your true knowledge to the game. So Mayo can create his shots better. Gordon drives more efficiently with his body frame. He outweights Mayo by 10 points and being an inch shorter. It’s not much, but its enough muscle to plow through lanes. Also who’s more known as the better shooter? Comon now. I believe Gordon is also a better defender, but then again I don’t want Mayo enough to make that assesment that you SEEM TO LIKE TO MAKE.
Comparing the two is more like Audi’s and BMW’s. But BOTH ARE AVERAGE SG’s. Audi and BMW are average cars. They’re luxuary cars, but their not the most expensive. That BIG dropoff you made shows the knowledge and clear bias you have.
And are you certain Westbrook would make it? Does it really make sense to have Rondo, Westbrook, and Rose on the same team? Especially in an international level where shooting becomes a VERY important factor. If you STILL believe it makes sense to have Rondo, Westbrook, and Rose on the same team, then yeah, no, your better off staying away from team assement talks. Its not to argue that Westbrook won’t make the team, but he’s not as stable as you think.
Come on....
You have to understand dude OF COURSE WE"RE BIASED FOR OJ. You’re biased for Eric Gordon which is completely fine. In my opinion Eric Gordon and OJ are pretty much just as good as each other. OJ can be a great player when he’s not being passive and looks to score before he passes. Eric Gordon has lit us up plenty of times to the point where we are debating whether we should’ve traded for him and not OJ. He’s more of a True SG than Mayo is who is having an identity crisis right now of whether or not he’s a SG or a PG. I don’t think that they are average SG. If anything it is arguable that they both are top 10 SG.
I still wish that OJ got that spot over Eric Gordon but oh well. Good luch to EG and your team this year.

I know it is old stuff but, I think OJ ggot cut because he was in direct competition with Andre Igoudola.
