In Case You Were Wondering, Xavier Henry Is Still Not Signed
Yes, over roughly $300,000 dollars, or under 1% of the Grizzlies total payroll, Memphis has still not signed #12 overall draft pick Xavier Henry.
Is this frustrating? Of course. You should be angry, but what can we do?
In fact we really don't even know much more about the situation, since the Commercial Appeal is hardly getting their nose into the negotiations, if any negotiations are even occurring. It's pretty hard to say at this point, since both sides appeared completely fed up with each other.
I'm almost certain that at this point every 1st round draft pick has signed with their respective team, as Cole Aldrich recently got his deal. Well, every draft pick but Greivis Vasquez, the Grizz's other first rounder.
Rookies are typically the best deals in the league in terms of production per dollar, and they're also unexposed to the brutal sports business. I guess Henry and Vasquez are being thrown into the fire early by owner Michael Heisley, but that hardly bodes well for their future sentiments for the franchise.

djturtleface;
can you come up with somewhat of an explanantion as to why Grizz’s are lowballing their rookies besides “Heisley is cheap?” I mean.. Donald T. Sterling is cheap. But he’s not cheap enough to lowball his rookie.
But then again.. Grizz just offered Gay the max, which imo made no sense besides showing that Grizz are willing to commit to loyalty of their players; but even then, I don’t think Gay needed the Max to be happy.
They are calling it a new "organizational best practice"...
Claim they want everyone they draft from here on out to have these sorts of things.
I’ll poke around to see if I can find more, but that’s all we know now.

how can that be a best practice if it’s never been done before? This is one of those hilarious “worst practices” like offshoring IT and customer support to India.
Henry and Grizzlies
I don’t think it is a fair assumption to say both sides are “fed up” with each other. They are still negotiating and the Grizzlies at least seem to be believe a deal will be done before camp. Henry was held out of Vegas by his agent who was trying to force a speedy settlement and not because of any animosity between the camps.
The Grizzlies have instituted a new policy on rookie deals that requires performance incentives being hit before bonuses are paid. It is a hard line but a fair one assuming the incentives are attainable. Right now the Henry camp feels they are excessive and are trying to get a better deal for their client. The Grizzlies believe they are not excessive and to earn more than 100% of the negotiated pay scale requires more than simply putting a uniform on by the player.
I expect both rookies to be signed and in camp for the beginning of training camp.
