Gasol Contract Q
Hi Guys... Knick fan here.
I was curious the exact situation with your Tall Spaniard? I was always under the impression that he would be a RFA this offseason, but I have been hearing chatter that he is actualy be a UFA due to the fact that he was a 2nd round pick and was traded before he played any games.
If you look at the contracts on HoopsHype, it appears he is in fact a UFA. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/memphis.htm
What is the real deal?
Thanks!

Gasol will be restricted because he will have 3 years of service time.
I suggest using Sham Sports as your salary guide and not HoopsHype. (Mark Deeks, the fellow who runs Sham, is rather detailed and good at getting details in contracts right.) He’s also a good hoops writer too.
Here is the Blurb from Larry Coon’s FAQ on Restricted Free Agency:
The issue with Gasol isn’t that they traded for his rights (which is true) or that they signed him to an over scale contract. The issue is that they simply couldn’t extend him before the contract ended. That said, he is still a RFA who will likely be retained by the Grizz. At the very least, they have Bird Rights to Gasol and that will allow them to offer more.

No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
If Omri has 12 games with 85+ TS% (20+ mins only) on the season, I will send RikSmits a slice of Cherry Pie with real Californian cheese pasteurized locally in Washington state.
