Resetting the Grizzlies' Roster

So, this is free agency on a caffeine binge. As players are frantically moving across the country, I constantly am finding myself feeling like a step or two behind. After yesterday, with the Memphis Grizzlies' apparently, for now, pulling twice-almost-Indiana Pacer O.J. Mayo off the trading block, things may be settling down here.

As the league-wide focus continues to be on the smoldering train wreck that is David Stern, Owner and Chris Paul, Trade Prospect, the Grizzlies, having crossed the one major item -- resigning team anchor Marc Gasol -- off their free agency list, can step away from the fracas of the shortened everything and get some basketball in. The regular season starts in, oh, 12 days, after all.

That being said, now's a good time to remind ourselves of the current roster the Grizz will be practicing with. Before something changes again.

Star-divide

Guards

Tony Allen

Mike Conley

Xavier Henry

O.J. Mayo

Jeremy Pargo

Josh Selby

Ishmael Smith

Greivis Vasquez

Forwards

Darrell Arthur

Josh Davis

Rudy Gay

Zach Randolph

Walter Sharpe

Brian Skinner

Sam Young

Leon Powe

Centers

Marc Gasol

Mikki Moore

Hamed Haddadi

Really, the only notable exception is the newest Heatle, Shane Battier. Otherwise, the Grizzlies will return with last season's team intact. Continuity just feels like it will play a much bigger role in this crazy sped-up lockout season, and seeing Gasol, Gay and Mayo still on the roster makes me feel good about the front office's vision for the team as well as the execution of the franchise's goals this offseason to this point.

From here until December 26th, the name of the game should be avoiding further injuries and rounding into shape the best a team can in less than two weeks. With the major issues and questions seemingly (seemingly is key; who the hell knows what could happen with all this turnover?) out of the way for the Grizzlies, all that's left now is for this season's opening tip to get here already.

Also, who knew Mikki Moore was still giving it a go?

Well...

we waived Ish Smith, and I’m pretty sure we don’t have Leon Powe. Hamed is still in Iran, Chris Wallace confirmed that today, and I seriously think Mikki Moore may be dead.

It was a particularly small egg...thats why I asked.

Ish Smith seemed like a goner

after we drafted Josh Selby and signed Jeremy Pargo. I can’t find the link at the moment, but Powe’s agent said that he wants to come back because he thinks he can get minutes here.

I couldn’t find it either, I looked before I posted because I didn’t wanna seem like Tooly McToolerton, but I didn’t find anything. I found the link that said we had picked up Mikki Moore, but I’m still pretty well convinced he’s no longer alive.

I’d love to have Powe back though. I’m a huge fan of his, and I really enjoyed him being here for the run last year.

I got a chuckle out of Tooly McToolerton

My only concern with this roster is defense from the bench. We got schooled in the OKC series last year in bench production. With Battier gone, the bench’s defense mentality doesn’t seem to be changing, especially in guarding perimeter scorers.

Xavier isn't a good defender yet, but I think he can get there

One of my (few) fond memories of him last year was one game against the Lakers when he really seemed to frustrate Kobe. He has the size, length, and athleticism to be a good defender. I also think he’s more committed on that end than someone like O.J.

I seem to remember Sam Young being pretty decent on that end as well, but I’d have to go back and look at a few games before I’ll testify to it or anything.

I do agree with you that we need a committed defender/energy player coming off the bench now that Tony is a starter. Hopefully, Sam or Xavier can take over that role. If not, I’d be in favor of acquiring one—they’re usually pretty easy to come by; we might even be able to find a someone in the D-League.

Pargo is supposed to be a decent defender, and OJ isn’t awful, he is just always undersized against everyone. I would love to get a bench version of TA though, whoever that may be.

Also, we waived Mikki Moore today. I’m not sure what the exact reason is, but I suspect its because he’s been dead for a few years.

On another note, Andy Rautins was waived by Dallas. I’d love to have him on the bench. He is a lights out three point shooter and played at Syracuse where they are known for their astounding zone defense.

Just a Clippers fan that wants to know the info on OJ Mayo

Would you guys be willing to do a Eric Bledsoe for OJ Mayo deal?

we’re cheap, like to drink and are pissed off.
