A Quick Q & A on O.J. Mayo's Trade Status
Earlier today, Oceanary from our SBNation Timberwovles Blog Canis Hoopus sent me an e-mail asking me about O.J. Mayo. He had a couple of questions regard his trade status as his name had been linked to Minnesota as someone David Kahn has been targeting.
Here are his questions and the answers I had for him.
First off, is Mayo available?
As far as availability, I''d say that he is, though the organization has gone with the usual "we're not looking to deal" prose, he's their best trade piece and they are about a move or two away from becoming a consistent playoff team.
If Memphis was to deal him, I'd say the asking price has been lowered significantly than it was last year. I think they still would want two "good" players back for him but last year the talk was more like "one or two good players and give us a pick, too." If Minnesota was the team, perhaps Wesley Johnson, Jonny Flynn and one of your centers (Darko Milicic, Kosta Koufos, Nikola Pekovic or Anthony Tolliver) would be on the wish list.Corey Brewer, I think, doesn't have much value to Memphis because he still hasn't found a shot and Sam Young does some of the same things. Johnson, despite his advanced rookie age, has a bit more more room to grow and he's already a pretty good shooter (36% from three as opposed to 27% for Brewer).Flynn is a point guard and I'm sure you know those don't grow on tree's in Memphis, a team that has seen Allen Iverson and Marcus Williams run point over the past few seasons, which caused them to give Mike Conley a ridiculous sum of cash - and his play has been so bad, they recently signed Jason Williams to a contract. And one of your centers would be nice because, despite the awesome Gasol-Randolph combo, Darrel Arthur is not good enough to play Lamar Odom to their Pau/Bynum, so Memphis has no back-up center. Of course, Memphis would be taking one of your centers and be forcing you to take Hasheem Thabeet and his 2nd overall pick contract, which is the Mayo-tax at this point.
His demotion was made because he wasn't fitting in well with the first team, which has been an issue since he was drafted, and because the bench was one of the worst in the league because of their lack of a shot creator. Mayo has said all of the right things, but obviously going to the bench is not something any player would be happy about, at least one that's 23-years old. It's been a rough year for O.J. overall. First, he was asked to go to Summer League (very odd for a third year player that was clearly the best player in Las Vegas other than John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins) as the team wanted him to learn how to play point guard again like he did in high school. He played two games and collected six assists. He was cut from Team USA in favor of Eric Gordon or Stephen Curry while his teammate Rudy Gay made the squad, which had to sting, given their subtle battle in Memphis over supremacy in Memphis' backcourt (in which case, Gay's max contract must have hurt, too). Then he gets benched in favor of Sam Young and then he gets suspended for testing positive for DHEA.
Mayo is a young player and one that can play a lot better than he has this season but most people have given up on the notion that he's got room to grow his game. He's been largely the same player for the past three years. You can argue that he's flatlined because he's got three superior teammates that take touches on his team and that he could do better with a bigger responsibility within the offense but you can say that he's shown no sign of turning himself into something a lot better just as easily with the same amount of information to back-up your claim.I'm on Mayo's side in terms of whether or not he can grow. I've been a firm believer that he'd go to Los Angeles to take Kobe's spot in a couple of years (though the team would obviously feature Bynum as the number one option) and I think he can be a 20 points per game scorer on a playoff team. In Minnesota, he should fit well if a deal is made. Most people likely think of the T'Wolves as the Kevin Love rebounding show and the Michael Beasley ISO party in late games with little to no perimeter help to speak of. Mayo is a threat and he can get his own shot off the dribble decently. At the least, he's clearly an upgrade over Corey Brewer and he's fairly cheap at $4.5 million.

History
Revisionist history at it’s best. It’s not really an article. More what you would expect of an AI fansite. Fair enough OJ hasn’t had the same success yet, but the fanaticism is just as strong. You must close your eyes, block your ears and say “lalalalalala” when Sean Tuouy talks because it’s like you live on different planets. It’s so extreme to one side it’s like watching Fox News. The words have lost all meaning and have become a parody of themself.
Similar to JWill, I don’t mind OJ, I actually like him quite a bit. It’s his indoctrinated fanatical fans that are the pain in the butt. Especially if they are allowed to write blog articles.
Nail meet hammer.
Aussie, we’re dealing with OJ’s hype man here. Besides having a large portion of egg dripping off his face from his “OJ is the type of player that the Grizz should build around” statement, he is a 180 degrees the opposite on Conely. Conely is quickly becoming a top 10 PG and is one of the few ‘get to the rim’ threats that the Griz have, Mark quickly dispels any obvious improvements and career high numbers that MC is putting up.
OJ is what he is…a good shooting, undersized 2 that plays subpar defense and has an ego that doesn’t allow him to be a team player. That being said, OJ’s value has dropped significantly. If Minny would give up W. Johnson and a bag of balls I would give them OJ and Thabeet in a hearbeat. That would allow the cap space to sign Z and Marc and give us a good shooting wing that we really need (at a good price).
Also, I wouldn’t trade DA for Odom straight up if I were the Grizz. DA’s stock is rising and Odom’s is at best even.
SeahTuouy
Is the worst broadcaster I have ever heard in my life. We should start a thread of nothing but his foolish statements.
“There’s six minutes left, we really only need to play three of them.”

Totally disagree that Conleys poor play lead to the signing of Williams. I think it was Grevious’ inexperience and the fact that he has one move as far as playing point. The signing of Jason allows Grevious to be a scorer, like he was at Maryland. Yes he played point there, but he was their offense.
And if we were to get Johnson AND Flynn, I might crap a literal brick. I’m a HUGE Syracuse fan now thanks to those two. At the very least Memphis would be icreasing their jersey sales by two, cause I’d buy one of each. That should be enough to make them pull the trigger, right?
I love OJ Mayo, and I’d definitely like to keep him on our team, but at this point, I think it’s in our best interest, as well as the best interest of his career, to part ways. We would save 5.6 million next year, money that we’ll need to try and retain our big guys

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4r37pd9
Of course maybe a couple of 2nd round picks
If im way off tell me and make suggestions im mainly interested in Thabeet
I would really love to unload Hasheem, and I’d really like to know why in the world you are interested in him, but not at the expense of Sam Young. I’m sure something could be worked out though

Are starting C is Kwame Brown thats why haha
I know Thabeet hasnt exactley lived up to expectations but we are bone dry at C even though he probably wont be a starting quality C in the NBA i think he could be a decent one for us.
In a heart beat...
And I don’t even know who the Brown dude is…the Griz are guard heavy right now and this would free up $$ for next year. Plus the Griz need another quality big…besides the Big Sleeper Cell.
i think young could be a stud, but if it gets tha-bust out of our hair then im in

Trade Mayo Please
At the end of the day OJ is a good player and Memphis is a terrible organization. Problem 1. OJ not fitting in well with the first team is MANAGEMENTS fault. Why would you draft a scoring shooting guard when you have Rudy Gay? Stupid. Problem 2. OJ got sent to the bench because again, Memphis is a terrible organization. They drafted Grevis Vazquez and Xavier Henry……BUMS…..BUMS…..BUMS. They will never produce like OJ has and he had to go to the bench because…….those draft picks will never produce. When OJ leaves he will blossom and I can’t wait to see it. So I’m screaming……please trade OJ….he deserves and his fans deserve it. The air was let out of his fans when Memphis traded for OJ Mayo.
THE TRUTH
Yeah people tend to feel that way when you tell the TRUTH…….
Also when you're a dick.
I’ve always been in Mayo’s corner, and still am, but I hardly believe his fall from grace is all the organizations fault. Is it managements fault OJ misses a lot of shots? Is it managements fault that he plays poor defense? Did management make him show up late to shoot-a-round? (Many people forget that Randolph got benched that game too) Did the front office give him directions to the gas station he bought that energy drink at? No.
I agree that trading OJ would be best for him, to give him a chance to become a 20 PPG scorer, but to pin everything on the front office? Come on, man.
1. He and Rudy worked well together until Randolph came on board last year and Gasol started to blossom. (If you wanted to say why would you trade for Randolph when you have two really good scoring options, you have a much more valid arguement)
2. Have you seen Memphis’ record since OJ went to the bench?
I can make no arguement for Vasquez, but as for Xavier, he is a really good shooter, and I think if injuries hadn’t derailed his season, we’d see much better production from him.

Conley so bad?
Are you serious? His d is shakey but he has ran this offense so beautifully and has grown (much higher ceiling than oj) to all star potential this year. But saying this gays inury will give oj more shots but his lack of defense could hurt memphis’s playoff run, and if that happens oj will be gone this summer. Email me if ya wanna explain your conley so bad theory
To iw304
First off. Would you rather him be a timberwolf? cause I wouldlove to have kept kevin love. 2nd he is a combo gaurd not a scorer, but he is not talented or focused enough to be one. 3rd. Memphis is a young team always on the brink of the playoffs, oj hasn’t won ever, he broke ncaa sanctions and was a show off sense h.s. he wasn’t even the best player at usc, taj gibson. 4th, I don’t think oj will let you blow him so get off his cocky ass and realize a player never comes before a franchise…. even memphis who got a steal on vazquez and he is also a combo gaurd but he can defend…. to griz see ya in the playoffs
