Hasheem Thabeet Traded for Shane Battier; O.J Mayo Remains in Memphis
The Hasheem Thabeet era in Memphis is officially over.
Memphis has pulled off a trade which sends Thabeet and a future lottery protected first-round draft pick to Houston for Shane Battier, who returns to Memphis after a nearly five-year absence. The Grizzlies absolutely could use Battier's services with Rudy Gay out of at least four more weeks. Battier instantly slots in as the role of shut-down defender, viable scorer.
Battier is beloved in Memphis and will be welcomed with open arms. The issue, however, is how long will we continue to talk about the absolute mistake that was Hasheem Thabeet? It's hard to sell fans on trading the second pick of the 2009 NBA Draft for the 6th overall pick of the 2001 NBA Draft. It's the kind of deal that instantly begs Grizzlies fans to start listing the players who were selected after Thabeet who are turning into star players for their respective teams.
The deal was made for winning now. Thabeet has been a low-impact player, at best, for the Grizzlies over his career. Battier will help bridge the gap between the Rudy Gay injury and his hopeful return.
Another trade was announced, moving O.J. Mayo to the Indiana Pacers for big man Josh McRoberts and a Pacers first-round draft pick. This deal, however, fell through just before the deadline with the paperwork not having been filed in time.
It's an interesting deal. One in which, again, is the Grizzlies moving on and past a player who they seem to think doesn't have much of a future in their system. This deal also makes sense conjunction with the Battier trade. After losing Thabeet, the Grizzlies could use some help up front. McRoberts is not a beast in the paint (not that Thabeet was much more than a kitten), but he's a sufficient post player and good rebounder. His size would have helped.
Now the Grizzlies have Battier, Tony Allen, Sam Young, O.J. Mayo and eventually Rudy Gay playing the two wing positions. Reading that, the Mayo trade would have made much more sense, even though it's hard to justify moving a one-time franchise player for a low-impact rebounder and a draft pick in a weak draft class.
Let's hear it, Grizzlies fans. What do you make of these recent moves and non-moves?

It’ll be interesting to see how OJ responds to this. Lets just hope he swallows his pride, saddles up, and plays good hard basketball for the next two months

How can a franchise have an epic win and an epic fail in a 2 minute span.
Thabeet and a pick for Battier…win. Botching the trade for OJ and having him come back to play for the team…F-A-I-L. I’m not going to argue the winner/loser of the Indy trade for Mayo but AGAIN the front office/ownership looks like a clown show complete with yackity sacks playing in the background after failing to get the trade done…and Heisley is the head Bozo with his excuses and spin. Turrible.
I made this point earlier and I'll make it again
I’m not defending Heisley at all, but anytime you get too down on our front office, just look at what Boston did today, and it will make you feel a little bit better.

No...no it doesn't.
Boston has rings/banners/hall of famers that litter its lineup. Trading Perkins maybe suspect to some but they brought Ray Allen and KG in and won. They are still the favorites to win the East and Perkins is coming off a big time injury. I don’t think that was as one sided as some think.
Its not just Perk.
They traded Harangody, Serdin, and Marquis Daniels. And in those deals, got nothing back that can help them this year, just picks and cash. Now sure, they may end up being able to use the cash to sing Troy Murphy, unless he decides to sign with Miami. They were the number one seed in the east and gutted their bench. Who’s gonna make a difference for them outside of Big Baby? Von Waffer? Is he gonna step up? Delonte West? The guy who got busted carrying more fire arms than half the south? Yes, we flubbed up not getting the OJ deal done in time after already announcing it, but Boston is a major market who just screwed the pooch a lot harder than we did, and they didn’t even call the next day.

Wait...
So Daniels (who is out probably for the season) Erden , and Harangody (an undersized, non athletic PF…I’m pretty sure Big Baby can cover that role) was going to get the team over the hump? Harangody’s minutes would completely go away with Green coming on board anyway. And you do realize that Jeff Green is a bench player…who started for the Thunder.
You would seriously take three D-League players over those guys? Be my guest.
