Grizzlies Strengths On Display in Victory Over Thunder
If you've watched the Grizzlies all season you know they are strong in two particular areas: post play and forcing turnovers. Those also in the know are aware that the Grizzlies have struggled this season winning key games on the road. After all, aside from the a playoff win over the Manu Ginobili-less San Antonio Spurs, Memphis relied heavily on home cooking in order to move past the Spurs. Sunday afternoon, though, a perfect storm came through Oklahoma City.
With the Grizzlies victory over the Thunder in Game 1 the story-line is simple: We got the one game we needed. Just 24 hours after toppling the Spurs in the first round, we here at SoV wrote that the Grizzlies are going to have to somehow find a way to win a game in Oklahoma City. The Thunder were 30-11 at home during the regular season, while Memphis won just 16 road games prior to their Game 1 win over the Spurs in the first round. Win on the road in either games 1 or 2 and this dream season could actually continue. Well, we got the first one...
I can't say enough about the play of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol against a longer and larger Thunder frontline than we're used to. With Kendrick Perkins and Nazr Mohammed both generally new to us, the early concerns were whether or not the Grizzlies would continue to dominate the post. Does scoring 52 points in the paint count as a dominant performance?
Randolph was, for a lack of better words, a force in Game 1. He scored 34 points on 12-of-21 shooting, with both Randolph and Gasol hitting enough long jumpers to keep the defense honest. The step-outs by OKC allowed for Mike Conley and Tony Allen to see open cuts to the basket. With the Grizzlies among the league's worst in mid-range jumpers (24th, 38.4% shooting from 16-23 feet) and eFG% (27th, 50.1 eFG%), per HoopData, the fact that Z-Bo and Gasol added to the Grizz hitting mid-range jumpers helped open up the baseline and the cutting lanes in the paint. A success!
While the Grizz also had great success in taking care of the ball (21:7, AST:TO), they also showed great strength in forcing turnovers. Making the Thunder cough up the ball 18 times, including 7 turnovers by Russell Westbrook alone, helped get the Grizzlies out in transition for easy buckets. As I said yesterday, the key is forcing the Thunder's hands, but using ours.
Also pushing Westbrook to take jumpers was HUGE. Another key in our predictions series, if Westbrook were to give Mike Conley the Tony Parker back down this game could have gotten out of hand early, and not in our favor. Not a single Grizzlies fan thought Conely would be able to lock down Westbrook, What they hoped for was for Conley to goad him into taking jumpers. Time and again on Sunday he was giving Westbrook some distance 13-15 feet from the basket and almost daring him to take the jumper. And it worked! Each time Westbrook backed Conley down into the paint, it was almost a given that he'd score. Great job by Conley in adjusting.
Here we are up 1-0. The series is so far from over it's almost laughable. But, we Grizzlies fans will admit that all we wanted was to come home 1-1. At the very least that has been guaranteed. If we take care of business at home, we're in the Western Conference Finals. It's as simple as that -- yet it's going to be a HUGE battle. Don't expect a road blowout in Game 2.
Until then, Grizzlies fans, enjoy the ride!

first, lol
great win for your team. Z-bo is a beast, and have known so for quite a while. You have a great blog here TLorenzo. Has been a member here for quite a while (even though I’m a Laker fan), though not really commenting that much. So my question is, is there another grizzlies blog, since I’m really quite surprised at the low turnout of grizz fans in this blog.

we're a compact, yet dedicated bunch...
I can’t really say that there is a mass of Grizzlies fans out there, but I have a feeling they’re coming. I’ll never get on anyone for “jumping on the bandwagon,” though. After all, it takes a winning team to create a winning fan base. No knock on the Thunder, but were it not for their great run with Durant and Westbrook last season and this, you likely wouldn’t have the base there — same can be said for Miami too, no? There are some teams who, winners or losers, have strong fan bases (Lakers, Knicks, Celtics, Bulls, Blazers… even smaller markets like Kings and Raptors remain strong). Not to compare, contrast, etc., but we’re getting a lot of attention we haven’t had in a LONG time. So I think it will pick up — or at least I hope! At the very least I know that Griffin, Mark and I will be plugging along. Thanks again for stopping by and reading!
Yep
winning always makes things easier, so I’ll expect your membership to double, at least. Otherwise, Grizz fans don’t know what they’re missing. Keep it up TL, and good luck for the Grizzlies.

I'm a semi-bandwagon jumper, I suppose.
I’ve always been a Grizz fan since they moved to Memphis, and have supported them and was open about it, but I’ll admit I’ve gotten a lot more involved since they’ve gone on the playoff run. Some of that has to do with the fact I’m not a big NBA fan in general, and when if the Grizz are knocked out of the playoffs I probably won’t pay a bit of attention to the playoffs.
The Grizz have always had some fans, but a lot of people that almost seemed to hate them a couple of months ago now are suddenly jumping on the bandwagon. I do question those people a little bit for finally jumping on the bandwagon, but otherwise I don’t care that much. It’s human nature to support a winner more than a loser, and even the teams with solid fanbases have the bandwagon jumpers to some extent.

All are welcome!
Not about getting on people for being a bandwagon member, I think it’s a legitimate argument that it’s hard to expect people to root for a product which is lacking. It’s natural for teams playing as well as the Grizz to gain more fans — and it is HIGHLY welcome!
From a bored suns fan, a pic for my adopted team for this years playoffs

Wow, Randolph's a beast.
He shouldn’t be classified as a “Human” anymore. Goodluck in game 2.
I don't care who starts anymore...
I'm going to really enjoy this series
Magic fan here, but you all saw how that went.
Of the teams left, I really like the Grizzlies and Thunder because they are teams built the right way. I also really like the playoffs as a chance for young players to establish themselves as ‘good’. I really enjoy watching the energy and athleticism of teams like these.
Best of luck to the Grizz, and may whoever wins this series win it all.
Z-Bo & Co.
Just like they did against the Spurs, Randolph and Gasol ran all over the Thunder’s front line. Ibaka and Perkins looked bad defensively, as Z-Bo and Gasol combined for for 54 points on 63.6% shooting. They also got 23 rebounds to go along with a bunch of steals, blocks, and assists. A great all around night from the Grizzlies’ big men. It continues a trend from Round One, and it appears to have been a winning trend. Check it out:
nuggets fan here.
I am LOVING This team. Randolph reminds me of barkley. I don’t know if that is justified for both parties but damn he is good. Tony Allen Knee surgery what!? can’t even tell…. I think Boston might be missing him lol… OH and Battier. GREAT deadline trade. Conley, Allen, Battier might be the best perimeter D in the league (besides miami?) I am really enjoying this series so far, and if nugs could have made free throws we could be having a REAL fun time.
The thunder disgust me for some reason. Sonicsgate + rich fat white conservative Oklahomans just disgusts me…. (not to hate on cons)
Funny story here
I grew up my whole life as a huge Sonics fan, I loved Payton and Kemp.
When they sold the team, I decided to break my fandom, say screw OKC and go with my hometown team the Grizzlies. Been here ever since.
In all fairness, obviously, Memphis didn’t have a team when I first started watching basketball.
You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
I think it's a natural move...
easy to abandon a team who abandons its fans. We’re glad you chose the right team to follow… ha!
Zbo has Arrived
Love the rapid ascension of this team. They play hard and together, a bunch of intense dudes who look like they are having fun. I liked this team headed into the season, but it’s safe to say I didn’t predict this.
Wrote a bit on this today. Think Grizz fans will enjoy ir.
