Grizzly Links: In Which We Hope to Retain Marc Gasol
The biggest news of the offseason will be whether or not the Grizzlies maintain center Marc Gasol. I think we all agree that it would be in the Grizzlies' best interest to re-sign him, but then again we aren't the ones signing the checks. Truthfully, I don't see how we don't match any deal for Gasol, but stranger things have certainly happened.
In a night where all the rage was the NBA Draft Lottery, all we Grizzly fans care about is the whereabouts of Marc Gasol come next October.

It won't be devastating if Gasol doesn't resign
but it will certainly be close. He’s a huge part of this team, and we really don’t have any other center options if he leaves, considering Hamed is also a free agent, and I really don’t think he’s starting caliber.
If we do re-sign Gasol, I think there needs to be a clause in his contract that he spends the entire off season in the gym. Literally live there, eat there, sleep there, do everything there. He’s already a pretty decent shot blocker, but could you imagine if he added just 20 lbs of muscle this off season? He could be an absolute monster down there.

I don't think anyone thinks he is underrated
He is what is is, if I can borrow the term from every athlete ever. He’s a pretty decent shot blocker, a pretty decent rebounder, and overall, a pretty decent center. Problem is, there are very few bigs left in this game, and so yes, he is overrated, because he has to be overrated, because they are no other centers available.

yeah he does
Chris Vernon was talking on his show today (take it with a grain of salt) about how well these guys compliment each other and how it would effect both of them to not be on the same team. He said it would have a huge negative impact on both guys, more so Zach. That and he also talked about how Zach re-signed with the belief that Gasol would re-sign, and him not returning could bring out Portland Zach.

probably too early to play GM, but here's a trade proposal
Haven’t thought about how salaries would go, and feel free to flame me hard or embellish with draft picks/contracts/spare parts, but assuming we re-sign Marc, how about:
We trade OJ and Sam Young to Pistons for Stuckey, Pistons send Gordon to Cavs for Davis.
Grizz get a big guard who can play 1 and 2. I often liked Conley and Vasquez on the floor at the same time, at least on offense. Imagine Conley and Stuckey out there. Stuckey might flourish as a 6th man or at the 2 without having the pressure on him to be the man like he does in Detroit.
Pistons get a pass-first PG who can really lead the team, OJ being OJ, and a decent tweener in the Old Man.
Cavs get All-star caliber SG and room for Kyrie Irving.
Stupid, I know. Cavs would probably need picks to sweeten the deal, but imagine a (healthy) starting lineup with Conley, Stuckey, Gay, Randolph, and Gasol. Yikes.
I don't see it happening.
Stuckey is just as young as Mayo, and cheaper, but shoots much worse from behind the arc, and at this point, we have to have better outside shooting to open things up for our guys down low. Having a healthy Rudy Gay and a healthy Xavier Henry (if he isn’t trade bait) should open things up though. But I’ll admit, I’m a little biased…
I don’t think we should trade OJ. I think he knows his role on the team now, and I think next year, he will thrive there and be a legitimate 6th Man of the Year candidate. If I’m in the Grizzlies front office, and bear in mind, there is a good reason why I’m not, I’m looking to restructure OJ’s contract, see if he’d take less money to stay for a few more years. If anyone would, you have to think it would be OJ. He was the guy who coming out of last year begged management not to break up the Grizzlies. And if it is true that he now understands his role and is ok with it, its not a huge stretch to think he’d sign off on something like that.
