Are the Grizzlies on the Verge of Getting Marreese Speights?
We know that the Grizzlies have long been in pursuit of Speights, so this really comes as no surprise. I think that the real question here is cost. What's it going to cost us? Don't get me wrong, I know that we need an athletic big who can score and spell both Gasol and Randolph, but, again, how much?
Would you send O.J. Mayo in some sort of package deal?

All about the cost.
I honestly don’t know what this would begin to cost. I’d be more than fine with dishing out a draft pick for him, mainly because we don’t have any good ones coming up. Cash wise, OJ doesn’t make sense for Philly, unless they send over another piece. Plus, thats an undersell on OJ in my opinion.
However, I feel like this does indicate that Randolph’s injury is more serious than a bruised knee. Look for him to miss at least a month.
It was a particularly small egg...thats why I asked.

One report I saw is saying it’s Xavier, not OJ’s, who’s being traded. It’s hard to form a good opinion on this stuff when we’re getting contradictorary details.

I would do that.
I just didn’t even consider it because he is injured.

Mayo not making any sense for Philly was my first reaction.
They’re already putting the ball in Evan Turner’s hands on a regular basis. Another “lead guard” type who wants to dribble it?
Xavier Henry at least isn’t redundant to Turner’s specific skill set. Either way, does this align their roster though?
"Opinion ...a confession."
Philly's a weird team, I don't really know what's going over there
Between Turner, Iggy, Lou Williams, Meeks, and Thad, they have a bunch of pretty talented 2-3’s. They’re weak as hell up front though (Spencer Hawes is their starting center!). Do they really want to trade away a big for another wing? None of it makes sense to me. However, I’ll take Speights for Xavier if that’s really the proposed trade.

Sixers fan trying to make sense of things for you.
Now that the pieces have been announced days ago, obviously the Sixers weren’t looking to get another wing player. They didn’t want to take any more salary because of the luxury tax and they obviously didn’t have a spot to add a wing player.
Speights was seen as a lost cause. Poor work ethic and beyond poor BBIQ. He rebounds at a nice rate and has range on his jumper. He holds his own in man defense when he’s not taking the worst flops I’ve ever seen (and by that I mean that they fool nobody, including the refs). He seems completely lost when trying to play as a team though. He makes poor rotations on defense and bad decisions on offense.
As for what seems to be a playing time issue, there isn’t much of one. Thad may look like a SF but he really plays almost all of his minutes at PF. Which is just as good because he doesn’t have a jump shot or the lateral quickness to guard opposing 3s.
The rest of the minute distribution goes something like this:
SF: Iguodala 68%, Turner 29%, other 3%
SG: Meeks 43%, Turner 25%, Lou Will 31%, other 1%
PG: Jrue 74%, Lou Will 23%, other 3%
Numbers from 82games.com. While it looks like there’s a logjam there’s plenty of minutes for all of the players. Though some believe that Turner should be getting more of Meeks’ minutes.
Upon further review
What is our interest in Speights? I understand he is 6’10 and should be a servicable back up center, but his stats are pretty pathetic. Is it just because he doesn’t play much at all or has he been injured?

It’s kind a bad sign when you’re coming off the bench behind Elton Brand and Spencer Hawes.

Speights = 1,000% better than Josh Davis.
He plays a bit like ZBO. Minus the rebounds and hustle. Grizz should be able to whip him into it. We have always gone after Florida Gators too (Miller, JWill, Roberson). He’s an SEC guy so it’s possibly he didn’t fit well in Philadelphia / the North.
I just looked up a picture of him, and…yeah, you’re right. He’s a big boy.

Anyone is better than Josh Davis. If the primary goal is to get someone better than Josh Davis, surely we can do that without trading for someone and taking on $1 million.

Is this the Josh Davis who's been a journeyman for a while, and on so many summer league rosters and such?
(Minnesota fan.) I like the guy. He’s a classic hustle player in those settings. But, uh, yeah.
Speights has been a pretty decent backup-level player in Philly. He plays help defense, gets some blocks…. Has an NBA body.
I hate to see you guys making deals out of necessity after an injury, though. Sympathies.

Griz get Spreights
NO gets Xavier Henry
76ers get 2 2nd round picks
I don't see it.

2 minds about this trade
I know we really need a big and we’d get one without giving up much. On the other, I like X (he’s my avatar for fuck’s sake!) and I’d like to give him more of a chance.

I’m also with you on Xavier. He was the 13th pick. He should have definitely been on a little bit longer leash. Now I know just because you were a high pick, that doesn’t mean you can’t be dealt fast (We see you Hasheem Thabeet). But Xavier was just hurt and never proved completely incompetent and unable to play basketball on any level like Hasheem did.

he’s had more than 3 seasons, Xavier’s had half a season.

And Xavier is still only 20, I get it.
The comparison that comes to mind for me is Anthony Randolph, who’s getting inconsistent minutes with my Woofs now. He and Speights were in the same ’08 class; Randolph went 14th and Speights 16th overall.
Both put up very reasonable numbers, but they’ve been inconsistent. Randolph, like Speights, got himself buried behind a pretty suspect front court (in New York) and was dealt on the cheap. (The Wolves got him for Corey Brewer last year, and they weren’t keeping Corey either way.) AR’s sort of the lean, running version of this level of PF talent, and Speights is more of the power body take.
"Opinion ...a confession."
I prefer Randolph personally
His rebounding numbers are pretty good, and he gets a lot of blocks (I’m not confusing this with good defense though). Based on the small amount of time I’ve seen of him play, it seems like his biggest problem is that he tries to do too much on offense rather than limit himself to garbage buckets (which is what he should be doing). However, with his rebounding and blocking, he at least has some discernable skills.
Speights doesn’t seem to stand anywhere.
Btw, I remember when he was drafted someone at FreeDarko said that he had the “most NFL name.” So true.

Heh. You're right, "Marreese Speights" should be an outside linebacker.
Grass is usually greener, isn’t it? Anthony Randolph is maddening. You’re absolutely right that he needs to play the garbage role, with his offense coming on put-backs – he’s unreal sometimes bounding in around the hoop – and alley-oops. He should be a sort of bench version of a running, Tyson Chandler 4-5. Instead he wants to be a point guard at times. Nice kid, though. Former Army brat, soft-spoken. He gets shaken by calls and whatnot.
As any kind of stand-in for Zach Randolph, though? Randolph looks like one of the aliens from the Close Encounters ship. Marreese Speights is the rushing OLB you need playing that role. (Or Al Jefferson.)
"Opinion ...a confession."
Randolph is one of those guys I always trade for in NBA 2k no matter what team I’m playing for. Then I turn him in a super role-player. He does seem like a nice kid.
Thanks for the well wishes feral, I hope Speights can be a poor man’s Zach Randolph until he gets back.

Stay healthy tonight. I look forward to Marc Gasol putting up a 12-for-14 line.

Why do you guys want Mayo gone?
It seems like he lost a lot of his value? What would guys want/expect for Mayo?

I was trying to think of teams that need a shooting guard, I got...
Suns, Timberwolves,Clippers, New Jersey, Utah, Boston
The Clippers, New Jersey, and Boston don’t really have anything much to offer outside their core players that they’re not going to trade anyway.
The Suns have several decent young bigs (Gortat, Robin Lopez, Markief Morris). If they offered one plus something else, I’d take it. Utah is loaded in the frontcourt, but all of them have a lot of value, so we’d probably have to give them at least OJ + something else to get either Millsap or Jefferson. Minnesota desperately needs a 2, and if they were smart, they’d be trying to trade Anthony Randolph, Beasley, or Wes Johnson for someone like OJ. If they threw in a pick or another player, I’d at least consider it.

I would definitely do Wes Johnson. I’m pretty biased cause I love Syracuse, but I like him.

Wait 'til you see him tonight.
Wes is, uh, not exactly deserving to start. Wes has been a very willing passer in the NBA, and aside from that there’s not much Wes Johnson’s been successful with. His lack of handle has predictably been the big problem. He makes some defensive effort, too. I guess. He was old coming in, so the upside is questionable at best.
The roster just plain doesn’t have any wing talent to displace Johnson. It’s been that way for running on three seasons now, ever since the deal that got the #5 pick that turned into Rubio. We have a stable of power forwards, though, for sure. Love, Derrick Williams, Beasley (a bit more naturally than as a three anyway), Anthony Randolph, Anthony Tolliver who’s a nice glue guy….
It’s fairly obvious that re-alignment should be happening, here. Mayo gets talked about intermittently on Canis Hoopus.
"Opinion ...a confession."
Yeah, I read Canis Hoopus a lot and I see the "love" that Wes gets over there
I thought he’d be really good coming out of college….whoops.
The TWolves are my “second team” this season, and everytime I see Wes screw up I imagine everyone at CanisHoopus cringing.
